Wooden Toys

I love buying wooden toys for the children. They last longer than plastic ones, especially the abuse my children put them through. Not only that, they are more pleasant to look at and I’m sure more fun to play with as well. The only thing that makes me re-consider buying them is the price. They are significantly more expensive than plastic toys. One place that sells wooden toys at affordable prices is IKEA. Their wooden train set and tracks are a great bargain.

A dear friend of ours recently passed us a lot of her children’s old books and toys. One of the toys is a wooden “memory” game. Ally is now at an age where she is starting to understand how to play board games. We started with simple “memory” cards, working our way from 6 cards to 20. Most of the time we play when Max is napping, this guarantees an uninterrupted game. Sometimes she wants to play while he’s awake and he often crawls over and chews up her cards. This wooden set is a blessing, they can withstand Max’s chewing and the paint/print on them is non toxic.  Remember when I said wooden toys lasts? This game was her daughter’s when she was a little girl, her daughter is now 14! Once the children outgrow the game, we can hopefully pass it on to someone else.

It still looks brand new after 14 years

Such sweet simple designs

Speaking of games, she was also given a giant “Snakes & Ladders”. We played it a couple of times and after the 3rd time, she was starting to get the hang of it. I remember playing board games with my family as a child. After dinner, mom would take out a game and play with my brother and I. It was such fun and a great way to spend time together. At Ally’s age, it also teaches her to be patient, take turns, and even simple counting skills. More importantly, it teaches her how to be a gracious winner/loser * I really don’t like the word loser, it has such a negative connotation. She understands that she can’t win all the time and that the main aim is to have fun, not to win.

I’ve no doubt that it’s going to be even more fun when Max is old enough to join in our games.
